Back... Back Into Time DJ Static and Professor Groove began broadcasting WEFUNK to Montreal in 1996. The studio and airwaves of CKUT (McGill University) have been WEFUNK's home throughout our decade-plus on the air. After about 18 months doing late-night sessions, the show settled into Friday night party hours — midnight to 2am — in January 1998. Early that year we also began webcasting and archiving our shows online, and the world got their taste of the WEFUNK sound. iTunes started syndicating our radio stream in 2001, giving WEFUNK a lot more worldwide exposure. Since then we've been doin' our thing, searching out new grooves to make you move, recording hundreds more weekly shows and building up the website. Montreal's still bumpin' WEFUNK every Friday night on CKUT, and you can catch us 24/7 here on wefunkradio.com. The Essence WEFUNK celebrates a lineage of powerful, inspired music. The roots of soul, funk and rapping go back way further than the 70s, but something special began when James Brown gave the drummer some, Larry Graham hit the bass harder, Kool Herc gave the dancers breaks, DJ Hollywood worked the mic... and musicians worldwide found the funk seeping through their walls and into their music. Strong music gave a strong foundation to speak on social problems, relationships, politics and living conditions. And it made one hell of a party groove. Funk gave birth to hip-hop, and as the past grew into the present funk and hip-hop touched every modern music, leaving their mark—a swagger, a groove, mo' bounce... and something to twist your face and nod your head to. You know it when you hear it. And we play it on WEFUNK.
Cookin' with breaks: Kraak & Smaak and Bugz in the Attic bring bold new flavors, The New Mastersounds and The Mighty Underdogs. Plus a hip hop odyssey, all the way from the crucial 80s electro track "Boogie Down (Bronx)" to brand new Jake One w/ MF DOOM and DJ Babu with M.O.P. Featuring new standout tracks from Madlib the Beat Konducta, Black Milk and Canada's own DJ Nana, feel-good disco breaks from the Family Tree and Positive Force, a Sharon Jones favorite retouched by DJ Spinna, plus an exclusive Static blend pairing Nice & Smooth's signature flow over a nasty N.E.R.D. beat. Guest DJ Kobal cooks up a bubbling stew of raw tropical funk, sampled gems and certified funk classics. Professor Groove rounds out the show with lots of jazzy head-nod hip hop joints. Shaun Boothe breaks down the chronicle of James Brown, Stevie Wonder shines in a rare live recording from 1973, and Parliament and Herbie Hancock bring the fat synth basslines. Plus a double shot of GZA: "Alphabets" from his new "Protools" LP as well as a GZA/Ray Charles remix courtesy of the Dysposable Heroes. Lyrical heavyweights Elzhi and Royce da 5'9" spit fire on "Motown 25", George Clinton puts a twist on the classic "Mothership Connection" and Rare Gems Odyssey ponders "What is Funk?" Plus golden soul by Leroy Hutson and new West Coast bangers by Strong Arm Steady and People Under the Stairs. DJ Static and Son Of Soul close out 2006 with some rollerboogie glide in their stride, underground disco breaks on the side, and some choice Dilla cuts to round out the show. DJ Static hooks up a Nas tribute marking the release of "Hip-Hop Is Dead", then smooths it out with a cool-out set featuring Aloe Blacc, Myka Nine (Freestyle Fellowship) and newcomer-to-watch Georgia Anne Muldrow. Professor Groove keeps the funk ruff enuff (but not too tough for Mr. Big Stuff). Listen close for some foundation loops 'n breaks including a "Kool-meets-Kool" sample moment. Celebrating 10 years and 450 shows of WEFUNK... lots of party funk, underground hip-hop classics and live rhymes. DJ Static traces a classic break back from Jay-Z to P.E. all the way back to Johnny Pate, and Montreal MVP's Preach, Butta Beats and Blackbird get the live flavor flowing with freestyles, trumpet and beatbox. No Luck Club blesses WEFUNK with a half-hour live set packed with body-moving breaks and Latin vibes. Plus a James Brown/Diamond D sample moment sparks off a classic late 80s hip-hop set, with a lil' something from the 1st No Luck Club album thrown in the mix. WEFUNK gets the lowdown from James Brown's Soul Sister #1, Marva Whitney, during a special half-hour feature. Plus Rawkus is back with their 2nd project Kidz in the Hall, and Static digs up a couple dusty non-LP gems from KMD and Group Home. Nas & Cee-lo) plus the first cut off the much anticipated "Hi-Teknology 2". On the chillout tip, some funky reggae and a couple delicious instrumentals from the Liparis Nervosa Sextet and the Soul Investigators. WEFUNK talks to AG, the "giant in the mental" about his new album, the DITC crew and the art of sampling.
